More about us
BUMS at Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College — your gateway to the Unani medical profession
Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery — BUMS — is a 5.5-year MBBS-equivalent professional degree in the Unani system of medicine. After completing BUMS, you become a Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) with rights to diagnose, prescribe, perform minor surgical procedures, and run an independent Unani clinic across India and several countries that recognise the Unani system.
Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College, Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) is one of North Karnataka's longest-running Unani institutions — established 1998, affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka, and recognised by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Your degree is valid across India and counts for state medical council registration in any state.
What is Unani medicine?
Unani is one of India's six recognised systems of medicine (alongside Allopathy, Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Siddha, and Homoeopathy). It traces its origins to Greek, Arab, and Persian medical traditions and was systematised in the Indian subcontinent over a thousand years. Today Unani has its own degree colleges, hospitals, dispensaries, drug industry, and a regulatory body (NCISM) — same institutional weight as Ayurveda or modern medicine.
A BUMS doctor today practises a hybrid: classical Unani diagnosis (mizaj, nabz, qaroora) plus modern clinical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology). The curriculum is heavy and the degree is hard-earned — but at the end of it you are a full medical professional, not a paramedical aide.
Why Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College?
Established faculty and clinical exposure
Faculty drawn from Hamdard (Delhi), Aligarh Muslim University, and Bangalore. Many of our seniors are themselves alumni who came back to teach. The attached 100-bed Unani hospital runs OPDs in Mualajat (general medicine), Niswan wa Qabalat (gynaecology), Jarahat (surgery), Amraz-e-Atfal (paediatrics), and Ilaj-bit-Tadbeer (regimenal therapy). You get clinical hours from your second year, not just in the final-year internship.
Library + classical sources
Our library carries the Qanoon-fit-Tibb of Ibn Sina in original Arabic with Urdu and English commentary, Kamil-as-Sina-a of Ali Ibn Abbas, Hadeeqa-e-Advia, Bahrul Jawahir, and the standard NCISM-prescribed contemporary textbooks. Classical and modern, side by side.
Hostel + faith infrastructure
Separate hostels for boys and girls, mess (with halal-certified kitchen), prayer hall on campus, and a campus mosque. We're in a city where the Muslim student community is strong — finding masaajid, halal food, and student-friendly accommodation is never an issue.
NEET-UG admission, all-India seats
Admission to BUMS is through NEET-UG (the same entrance exam as MBBS/BDS/BAMS). Seats are split between:
- Government quota — through Karnataka KEA counselling (CET) — domicile preferred
- Management quota — open to students from any state in India, no Karnataka domicile required
If you've appeared for NEET-UG and are looking at BUMS as your option, our college is one of the more selective Unani colleges in South India. We have students every year from Bihar, UP, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Kerala — Kalaburagi is well-connected by train and bus from across the country.
Career paths after BUMS
- Independent practice — open your own clinic; entitled to "Dr." prefix and full prescription rights for Unani medicines
- Government Unani Medical Officer — UPSC and state PSC recruit BUMS graduates as Medical Officers in district Unani hospitals (typically pay scales matching MBBS MO)
- Hospital practice — Unani specialty wings inside multispecialty hospitals
- MD/MS (Unani) — three-year postgraduate specialisations: Mualajat, Ilmul Saidla, Hifzane Sehat, Tahaffuzi-wa-Samaji-Tibb, Niswan wa Qabalat, etc.
- Industry — Unani pharma R&D (Hamdard, Dawakhana Tibbiya, Himalaya, etc.), regulatory affairs, drug standardisation
- Academic — teaching at Unani colleges, with PhD path
- Practice abroad — Pakistan, Bangladesh, parts of the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia have Unani regulatory frameworks), Sri Lanka, Mauritius

A note for parents
Choosing BUMS is a serious decision. It's a 5.5-year medical degree, with a clinical workload comparable to MBBS in the early years. Your child will graduate as a registered medical practitioner with a Dr. prefix, lifelong professional identity, and a respected place in their community.
We accept that Unani is less commercially-known to families coming from cities where MBBS dominates the conversation — feel free to call us for a frank discussion of fees, scope, government job opportunities, and post-BUMS specialisation. We do not push admissions; we help families decide.

Frequently asked
What is the eligibility for BUMS admission?
You must (1) have passed 10+2 (PUC-II / Class 12) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with a minimum 50% aggregate (40% for SC/ST/OBC), and (2) qualify NEET-UG in the year of admission. NEET is mandatory across India for all AYUSH UG admissions since 2018. Knowledge of Urdu or Arabic is helpful but not a barrier — first-year curriculum includes language familiarisation.
Is Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College recognised? Will my BUMS degree be valid across India?
Yes. The college is recognised by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka. Your BUMS degree is valid across India for State Medical Council registration, government recruitment, and postgraduate (MD/MS Unani) admissions.
How are BUMS seats distributed at Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College?
We have 60 seats per batch, split into government quota (filled through Karnataka KEA / NEET state counselling, with Karnataka domicile preference) and management/NRI quota (open to students from anywhere in India and abroad). Roughly 30-40% are management seats; exact split varies per year per NCISM and KEA notifications.
What are BUMS fees at Tipu Sultan Unani Medical College, Kalaburagi?
Approximately ₹1,80,000 per year for the management quota; government quota seats are substantially lower. Fees include tuition, university charges, lab fees, and library access; hostel and mess are charged separately. Final figures change annually per NCISM and KEA notifications — call us after NEET results for a written current-year quote.
What is the duration of BUMS and what does internship look like?
BUMS is 5.5 years total — 4.5 years of academic study (9 semesters) followed by a compulsory 1-year rotating internship. Internship is paid (stipend) and rotates through OPD, IPD, OT, gynaecology, paediatrics, and community medicine postings at the attached Unani hospital and recognised government Unani hospitals.
Can I do MD/MS after BUMS?
Yes. After BUMS you can pursue 3-year MD or MS in Unani specialties: Mualajat (General Medicine), Niswan wa Qabalat (Gynaecology & Obstetrics), Ilmul Saidla (Pharmacology), Hifzane Sehat (Preventive Medicine), Ilaj-bit-Tadbeer (Regimenal Therapy), Tahaffuzi-wa-Samaji-Tibb (Social & Preventive Medicine), and others. Admission is through AIA-PGET (All India AYUSH PG Entrance Test). Many of our graduates have completed MD at Hamdard, AMU, and Bangalore.
Can BUMS doctors get government jobs?
Yes. Government recruits BUMS graduates as Medical Officers (Unani) in state Health Departments through state PSCs. Pay scales typically match those of MBBS MOs in AYUSH cadres. Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, UP, West Bengal, and Delhi are among the most active recruiters. Central government also recruits through UPSC for Central Health Service (Unani wing).
Is hostel available for out-of-state BUMS students?
Yes. We have separate hostels for boys and girls on campus. Mess includes halal-certified kitchen, prayer hall on campus, and a mosque adjacent to the boys' hostel. Roughly 60% of our students are from outside Karnataka — Bihar, UP, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Telangana — so hostel life is well-established.
How do I apply if I'm from outside Karnataka and don't have a Karnataka domicile?
Apply through the management/NRI quota. Submit your NEET scorecard, 10+2 marksheets, transfer certificate, migration certificate from your previous state board, Aadhaar, and photographs. There is no domicile requirement for management seats. Use the apply form below to start the conversation; we'll guide you through the document checklist.
What's the difference between BUMS and BAMS?
Both are 5.5-year AYUSH medical degrees. BAMS is in the Ayurvedic system; BUMS is in the Unani system. Both are NCISM-recognised, NEET-required, and lead to medical practitioner registration. Course content overlaps in modern subjects (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology) and diverges in classical theory and pharmacopoeia. Career outcomes are largely parallel; choice depends on your interest and connection to the system.
